David A Taylor was a consulting Naval Architect and Marine Engineer in Hong Kong with Harbour Craft Services Ltd and the author of the best selling book Merchant Ship Construction published by the IMarEST. He served for a period at sea before attending the University of Newcastle upon Tynne, UK, from which he obtained a BSc(Hons) in Marine Engineering and an MSc in Shipbuilding. He worked for some years for Swan Hunter Shipbuilders and lectured at South Shields Marine and Technical College and Hong Kong Polytechnic (now University).

He was awarded a PhD by the Department of Maritime Studies and International Transport of the University of Wales Cardiff. He was a Fellow of the IMarEST and a number of engineering institutions in the UK and Hong Kong. Davis Taylor passed away in December 2003, leaving a legacy of marine textbooks and publications.
